Top Economist: Recession Coming, But Boomer Retirees to Mitigate Job Cuts

The US is likely to enter a “shallow” recession in 2023, but the expected wave of Baby Boomer retirement should mitigate job cuts, The Conference Board’s top economist Dana Peterson said. Peterson noted that the US has “never had millions of people exiting the labor market at the same time,” and that the result would the continuation of a relatively tight labor market as compared to prior recessions. Canada Enhances Crypto Oversight, Cites Recent 'Insolvencies'

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) said all crypto businesses which operate in Canada are expected to go through an enhanced pre-registration process within 30 days. These pre-registration will have to include a detailed description of how clients' funds are stored and segregated. Providence Pension System Not on City’s Legislative Priorities List

The city’s annual payment to its pension system is forecast to reach $120 million by fiscal 2027, which would eat up 21% of the city’s general fund revenue. If nothing is done, the contribution is expected to swell to $230 million by fiscal 2040, according to a January 2022 report. Read more

Fitch Ratings has raised to AA from AA- its rating on $677.5 million general obligation bonds for New York City, citing, among other factors, an "improved financial foundation" post-pandemic and projected stable net pension liabilities over time "assuming actuarial assumptions are met." Read more
