U.S. State Pension Plans' Funding Ratios Fall in Q3

U.S. state pension plans' aggregate funding ratios fell in the third quarter to the lowest level since the end of 2022, according to Wilshire Advisors estimates. For the quarter ended Sept. 30, the estimated ratio dropped by 3 percentage points from three months earlier to 75.2%, the result of an estimated 3% decrease in asset values exacerbated by an estimated 0.8% increase in liability values. Republican Attorneys General Appeal Decision Upholding DOL's ESG Rule

Following a federal judge's decision in September to uphold a Department of Labor rule permitting retirement plan fiduciaries to consider ESG factors when selecting investments, a group of 26 Republican attorneys general challenging the rule will seek a review from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Saskatchewan Pension Plan Expanding Variable Benefits to All Members

The Saskatchewan Pension Plan is expanding its variable benefit option to all retiring plan members across Canada. The option, which was previously only available to Saskatchewan-based plan members, allows for continued investment choice and income flexibility, according to a press release, which noted members who opt for the variable benefit can consolidate funds by transferring in unlocked amounts from registered retirement savings plans. CPPIB Reports $79BN Exposure to Green and Transition Assets

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board says it will meet its goal of holding $130 billion in green and transition assets by 2030, according to a new report by the investment organization. The CPPIB’s current green asset mix was $79 billion as at March 31, 2023, up 17.9 per cent year-over-year from $66 million. Read more

Ohio Bill Would Increase Police and Firefighter Pension Funds

Some Republican lawmakers want to increase certain pension fund contributions. House Bill 296 is sponsored by Representatives Thomas Hall (R-Madison Township) and Cindy Abrams (R-Harrison) and would incrementally, over four years, increase the contribution amounts to the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund. Morningstar Added to Florida's Israel-boycott List

Florida State Board of Administration, Tallahassee, has added Morningstar to its list of “Scrutinized Companies that Boycott Israel.” Trustee meeting materials did not provide any further information on the reason for inclusion on the list, except for a reference to Morningstar’s ESG research subsidiary Sustainalytics. N.J. Public Worker Pension Fund Posts Surprisingly Strong Gains Despite Volatile Fiscal Year

New Jersey’s public worker pension fund gained more than $5 billion in market value in the fiscal year that ended June 30, lifting its total value to about $91.4 billion as it continued to rebound from heavy losses in 2022.
